PERSONAL PROTECTION

.

Runner up prize in 2016 UK Guild of Tin Plate Workers, Harold Hobbs Annual Jewellery competition. The design brief for the competition was to create a wearable jewellery piece made from tin. Investigating traditional metal working skills and their uses, led me to research armour. The symbolic nature of armour as a form of protection and its decoration, often created by embossing, was something that particularly interested me. This starting point informed my research and ideas when creating my own modern symbols of protection. I decided to depict symbols of personal protection on a large shoulder piece to symbolise the bravado of masculine protection and on a necklace to symbolise the more subtle nature of feminine strength and protection.
